Character vs word
Chinese does not use whitespace between words. The counter reports character count (Han glyphs, one glyph = one character), plus a separate Latin word count when a passage mixes English or numerals inside the Chinese text. For Japanese and Korean, Kana and Hangul are also counted per character.
