TOK Essay Word Count

1,600 words. IB examiners stop reading at the ceiling. Here is what counts, what does not, and how the strongest essays use the budget.

The rule

The IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay is capped at 1,600 words. Examiners stop reading at 1,600 exactly; anything after is unmarked. There is no minimum, but a TOK essay under 1,200 will struggle to develop the two areas of knowledge and the required knowledge-question analysis.

What does not count

  • Title page
  • Table of contents (if used)
  • Prescribed title (the essay prompt)
  • Acknowledgements
  • Bibliography
  • Footnotes and endnotes (unless a footnote extends the argument beyond a citation)
  • Appendices

What does count

The main body text: introduction, development, conclusion. Headings within the body count. Direct quotations inside the body count. Any footnote that extends the argument (an examiner will notice if you push analysis into footnotes to game the limit; it is explicitly flagged in the moderation guide).

How the strongest essays distribute 1,600

  • Introduction: 150 to 250 words
  • First area of knowledge: 500 to 600 words
  • Second area of knowledge: 500 to 600 words
  • Comparison and synthesis: 150 to 250 words
  • Conclusion: 100 to 150 words

Try the counter

Paste the essay body into the live counter (leave title and bibliography out) and you will see the word count in real time. Aim for 1,540 to 1,590 to leave room for tokenizer drift between your counter and the IB’s.

Common questions

Do headings count?
Yes. Headings inside the body of the TOK essay are included in the 1,600.
Do footnotes count?
Only when they extend the argument beyond a bare citation. The IB moderation guide specifically flags essays that push analysis into footnotes to game the ceiling.
What if I hit exactly 1,600?
Fine, so long as your local tokenizer and the IB's agree. Aim 1,540 to 1,590 to buffer against a difference of 10 to 20 words between counters.
Do direct quotations count?
Yes. Quotations inside the body count toward 1,600.
What happens past 1,600?
The examiner stops reading. Anything past the ceiling is not marked, including a strong conclusion.
