Runs in your browser via PDF.js. The file never uploads. Max 50 MB.

How it works

PDF.js parses the file inside your browser. Nothing uploads. The page count is read from the PDF metadata; the word count is built by iterating each page and pulling its text content. When you close the tab, the file is gone.

Word count in PDFs

Word counts for a text-layer PDF should match Word within 1 to 2 percent. Differences usually come from footnotes and headers (Word can ignore them, PDF text extraction cannot), page-number tokens embedded in the text layer, and hyphenated line-break words that get double-counted by naive tokenizers. The counter uses a single-pass whitespace tokenizer and strips soft-hyphen artefacts to keep the number honest.

Common questions

Why does my count differ from Adobe?

Some PDF viewers count blank appended pages differently or add a cover sheet. The counter reports the page count as encoded in the PDF itself, which is what a print shop uses.

Can I upload a password-protected PDF?

No. Unlock it first in your PDF viewer, then try again.

Is there a file size limit?

50 MB. Larger files may run out of memory on mobile devices.

Do you save the file?

Never. PDF.js parses in memory and it is gone when you close the tab or drop a new file.

Can I batch multiple files?

Yes. Drop multiple files at once; each is counted and the totals summed for a project view.

What about a scanned PDF?

Scanned PDFs are images. Run OCR first in Acrobat or Preview, then drop the OCR’d file here.
